Twitter - The New Communication Standard?

   Posted by: Chip   in Overview

Update 1: It’s not Standard, it’s a new Tool :)

One week ago, I recieved an email (or spam, as you can say) from SocialMedian told me about its new feature Replize. It meant that from this time on SocialMedian users can simply use “@username” short code to interact with each other. This replize will be highlighted in the receiver’s homepage. Isn’t it just like Twitter?

I didn’t pay much attention for it, ‘ços I can’t understand SocialMedian’s concept, but suddenly I realize that more and more sites are imitating Twitter this way. It’s not simply about Twitter’s awesome concept or success, it looks like a new communication standard is comingggggg, and Twitter has to be very instrumental in it. Sooner or later, I guess, “@username” short code will appear in every social sites. Is there anything here make you think of mini-feed first introduced by Facebook several years ago? (plz correct me if I’m wrong).

Back to Vietnam market, I remember Jason’s blog post: “Why No Twitter Clone in Vietnam?“. It’s a great question in business aspect b/c agree with you, I see no reason for a Twitter clone in Vn. Twitter’s business model is so unrealll, and I’m sure Thomas can explain about that. The way Vietnameses communicate is different, and mobile services haven’t thrived in VN yet. Unfortunately, in fact, the question should be: “How many Twitter Clones in VN do we have?” and the answer is: “More than one”. I know at least 2 sites: http://qblog.vn with poor design, Twitter’s equivalent features (nothing new) and  http://hola.vn with nice clean interface and group feature (thanks Rick for introducing this site to me). I like group feature. There are lots of small communities in Twitter but I don’t think the way Hola is making it now will work. We just need a simple homepage for group, and whenever you want to post something to this group, you simply type “g groupname” code and everyone in this group will automatically recieve this message instead of having to log the main page. Hola belongs to Nguyễn Việt Tiến from Galaxy Media, but Qblog looks like some personal pilot project (some guys named Diệp, Bảo, but I’m not sure). So far, both of them have nothing to atract me.

Very clean

Very clean

One thing @TienNV (Nguyễn Việt Tiến) if you ever happen to read this post: Hola’s domain ends with .vn and it targets VN market, then why the hell it is in English? I know it’s easy to change the language, but I’m talking about the approaching way. Why you are in Vietnam, think as Vietnameses :) [I know I know my blog is in English too =.= ]

I think that’s enough. Yesterday Tharum shared me such a interesting song that I can’t wait to share it with you guys. It’s the Twitter song from Ben Walker: “You’re no one if you’re not on Twitter”. The title says it all, huh?

Hi Chip,

As we can recall, @username has been used to address recipient manually all the way back from 2000 via more traditional channels such as IM.

But not until Twitter actually utilized technology to enable automatic recipient recognition that the usage became widespread like you just covered.

My prediction (and expectation) is that this approach be used in popular services.

For example, in Facebook I can type @w-chipro for the message to be posted on your wall or type @m-chipro to send you a message.

Later I’ll send the idea to Facebook with reference to this entry of yours :)

Cheers,
TaiTran

Another service that works very well in India (where they have a lot more mobile phones compared to computers) is http://www.smsgupshup.com/

On SMS gupshup, the group messages go as SMS to people’s mobile phones. Do you think a service like this will work in VN.

Also, Have you seen http://laconi.ca/trac/

Laconi.ca is an open source implementation of twitter like microblog. You can run it on your server and create your own microblogging service. The nice think is lets say If I create a similar laconi.ca clone on my server, my users can post on your laconi.ca instance using the user id and password.

Some of the organisations I have talked to are looking at implementing something like this.

Huyen,

Yeah yeah, like people said: Twitter is such a new kind of blogging tools. Twitter define a new trend of blogging, mini-blogging. I know it, you know it, people know it… Please stop talking about it.

My point is: NO! Twitter is not only a new kind of blogging tools, but also give us 2 concepts: Platform and API system. Why don’t you write about it?

And what will you say if I ask you about Twitter’s cons?

(Sorry about my stupid English ^^)

@Taitran: Haha, I like your ideas. Someday maybe we just need to go to one site to manage all our activities on the web. Like from this site we can simply type: facebook-status to update our status on facebook; facebook-w-username to post a comment on our friend’s wall and recieve notification with the same syntax.
Anyone wanna work with me on that idea?
@Preetam: wow Laconi.ca looks interesting. I think I should spend more time working on it. I’m not sure whether a service like gupshup will work in VN. Vneses haven’t got used to pay for mobile services yet.
@Duc Ban: Twitter’s cons? What do you mean?
Calm down, Mr. Ban, it’s just some random thought of mine. I know nothing about platform or API, what should I do now =.=

hey Chip :)
hola is my pet project. - I had to demo it to a few people whose native language isn’t Vietnamese, so it’s better in English. It needs a lot of work to even reach alpha release, and I havent had time/resource to work on it yet :)

Twitter is social proprioception, we can use Twitter for many purpose and one of my interesting purpose is to detect user’s behavior.

Hi - wondering if you have any updates on twitter (and clone) use in Vietnam? I work for an ad agency and want to do some campaigns, but cannot find good stats on Twitter usage in VN. Hope to hear from you.
