OpenSocial Hackathon and BarCamp Hanoi are coming

   Posted by: Chip    in Networking

For you guys in Hanoi those expressed your jealousy of us after Google DevFest in HCMC and BarCamp Saigon, I have some good news for you today. I’m not trying to make my blog an event blog, but I can’t help blogging about it.

The first OpenSocial Hackathon in Hanoi is coming on Saturday December 13th at eXo Platform SEA Offices (7th & 8th Floors, Thai Ha Building, 11 Thai Ha Street. Dong Da District - Hanoi – Vietnam). The organizers of this Hackathon are noone other than eXo Platform guys (one of the companies who joinedGoogle DevFest Tour around South East Asia) and Jason Vu - co-ordinator of Google DevFest HCM. Frankly, the first Google DevFest HCMC wasn’t as successful as expected, lacked of participation from audiences and not many Vietnamese developers could understand such a long speech in English. But Jeremi promised this time it would be much more exciting with more hacking and less talk.
Here comes the agenda:

•  10:30AM – 11:00AM : Registration
•  11:00AM – 12:00PM : openSocial Presentation
•  12:00PM – 1:00PM : brainstorming + pizza
•  1:00PM – 5:00PM : Coding your openSocial applications
•  1:00PM – 2:00PM : guided walkthrough a first openSocial gadget
•  5:00PM – 6:00PM : presentation of what have been done in the afternoon

As promoted in eXo’s blog, this hackathon is to “help developers to use this new standard and to prepare them to the openSocial gadget contest where there are many prizes to win. It will be also the occasion for Vietnamese social networks to discover this standard.

Sounds cool lah?? But there are only 50 seats available, so register soon. I wish I could be there to join you guys!! I love everything for free hahaha.

Another good news is Jeremi and Ninh Nguyen and maybe some other guys in Hanoi are preparing for the 2nd BarCamp Hanoi. Dunno when exactly it is but it should be before Vietnamese traditional Tet holiday. This time I won’t miss it. Hope that you guys will fix the date soon so that I can plan for my Hanoi trip. Miss Hanoi so so much!!! And if any of you have any idea for BarCamp Hanoi or wanna help with organizing it, come visit its wiki or simply put down your comment here.

Live from Google DevFest HCMC

   Posted by: Chip    in Networking

Hey you guys, I’m here at DevFest HCMC.

First, the Internet connection is very slow. Looks like someone is downloading videos or films using DevFestHCMC’s line.

All documents for DevFest HCMC are available for access here; Twitter tag for this DevFest is *#devfesthcmc“; and if you’re a developer, join DevFest live chat here.

The topics are about: Shindig, OpenSocial, Hi5, Friendster, Google App Engine,…  Check it out here for more information.

But the topics just came after a long long time waiting. Jason won the first point when he points out that it’s b/c of Vietnamese time. “Cao su” or something, right? Anyway, I, Kevin and Thomas did have a great time preparing BarCamp marketing airforce.

Our airforce haha. Thanks Rick for your papers :">

I look silly with Thomas' glasses. Taken by Thomas' MacAir. How jealous!!!!!

I see many interesting people here. Jason Costa, technical developers managers from Google, Pamela and Vinoaj from Google too. And ofcourse Jason Vu, our beloved co-ordinator of this DevFest. Ah did I forget Pattrick Chanezon, his job must be the best job in the world, Google evangelist or OpenSocial Avocate, right? (Please correct if I’m wrong).

Thanks Duy Le for all the pics.

My comment: Well, even though both Jasons (Costa and Vu) seem to be quite happy about this DevFest, I personally think that it’s not as successful as they expected. Restricted registration, then many developers who registered didn’t show up. There were 300 ppl supposed to be there but less than 200 ppl were. That’s Vietnamese style. An important point to be noticed for our upcoming BarCamp.

Moreover, I guess most attendees yesterday couldn’t understand thoroughly the whole story, including me. Vietnamese developers’ English skills are not that good.

Anyway, it’s just my random thought. And everything else was very good. Congrats you guys, you really did a good job.
