News and Information

   Posted by: Chip   in Random Thoughts

I wanted to write about it a long long time ago, when Long asked me: “Why people go to Baomoi for news, then go to Google for news and then end up in Baomoi again? Why don’t they search directly in Baomoi??”

Gotta to go to sleep now. Will blog about it when I get back.

In fact, my question is “A lot of traffic to Baomoi is from SE. We know that we did a good SEO campaign, but if people used SE to search some information outside the online newspaper sphere, why did they still go to Baomoi (or any online newspaper) again?”

That’s what I call habit :)

@ePi

Example 1 for justifying your deliberation:

1. I just heard rumors about the recent News_A I am interested in
2. I am not sure whether Baomoi has updated News_A
3. I am pretty sure Google can point me to somewhere which hosts News_A
4. I search on Google toolbar
5. Bingo, Baomoi ranks 3rd (just an example, no implication) on Google search result
6. I follow the link from Google to Baomoi

I don’t spend time searching on Baomoi. I push the hard and time-consuming work of Search to Google.

Cheers :)

But TaiTran oi,

How will I hear the rumors? Via Twitter? SMS? YIM?FB?Email? It’s hard to tell TaiTran that Chip had a skateboard, I need to add some links bout this skateboard (pix or sth like that). And I think the online rumors almost go with link(s) and if they have the link, why do they Google again?

I don’t like the way BaoMoi’s woking. They ripped other’s woking. I think they just want to earn alot of traffic from SE amsp. BaoMoi is just a SPAM website.

@ePi:

Some situations why I would want to search on Google for news

1. Rumors that come without a link to the story

2. Rumors that come with only one link while I thirst for more

3. Rumors that come with a link with less authority. For example, person_P sends me a link to news site S1 and I want to cite the information in my research paper. If the information is also featured on Reuters, Bloomberg or CNN, I would want to cite from these sites rather than from the less popular S1.

Cheers :)

@Longo: Hehe I agreed with Tai, check out my latest blog post.
@Bao: Haha you’re right, habit. But you know, GG is only 10 years old.
@Dau Co: Hi anh, thanks a lot for visiting my site. Can you tell me a bit more clearly why you say Baomoi rip other ppl’s work? I think Baomoi should have a blog post to answer your opinion.

I think baomoi’s aim is not to rip but at the moment, it appears like that.

Baomoi dominates the SE, standing on higher or highest rank than the original news. It easily make the original author feel that ‘you are take my content first and now you take my traffic from my hand’. That is not a good image, but it is what baomoi seem look like.

I think as a baomoi member, you should appreciate the community’s feedback, what the community look at baomoi, instead of getting upset because it would help you guys review your strategy to build the right image in the community as you aimed to do at the beginning.

I think if baomoi keeps on being like that, it would be hated or envied or disliked (generally negative manner) by all the newspapers and news site. I think that is a potential disaster, because you know “don’t make trouble with the press”.

My opinion is baomoi should reduce some greediness at Search Engine in terms of hot news, besides, concentrate on finding way to promote the top service of yourself more clearly and effectively. Otherwise the wrong greadiness would kill itself.
