Anonym and Influence

Posted by: Chip   in Overview, Random Thoughts

Recently, two Vietnameses got fined 15 millions VND each (830 USD) for calumniating on 2 forums TTVNOL.com and SanOTC.com. Hanoi Department of Information & Technology charge them for distorting, slandering, diminishing the prestige of a security company named VNDirect. Well who dares to tell that no one knows who you are on the Internet? Last year, Vietnam government also published a policty to censor personal blogs. So, watch your very single words!

And just recently, the 21-year-old founder of 4chan.org was nominated as world’s most influential person by Time, beating off the President of the United Stateds Barack Obama as well as the Queen of communication Oprah Winfrey. As a forum (or you can call it online bulletin board), 4chan doesn’t have a registration system, enabling users to post & discuss anonymously, yes anyone from anywhere.

Does that make 4chan a strong & powerful community?

Well, our government knows it better than us.

*************
TTVNOL.com is one of the first & biggest forums in Vietnam. Dunno how many members it has at the moment.

SanOTC.com’s owned by SanOTC - an IDGVV’s porfolio.

Vietnamese source.

but the 4chan vote was hacked by members of the forum. but if you see how many people he got on his forum, he might be one of the most influential, at least in the internet.
the censorship thing is very bad for all of us, and it’s a worldwide problem, not only in asia europe is very bad right now.

Yeah but hacking makes the problem even more serious. See, his & his followers can control Time’s lists.
Hmm I don’t know much about censorship in Europe. But heard that censorship it is bad in the UK. Well, Sweden still has ThepirateBay.

Germany is just pushing a new law that introduces censorship lists for the first time. they say it’s against child pornography, but everyone knows it’s not the real reason.

Thanks for your information. I still have 3 questions:
1. Will it be possible for the government to control all that information (like we have millions blogs, thousands forums, blah blah)? Will Internet users accept that?
2. If yes, how would it affect the Internet. As we all know, anonym is one of the factors that makes 4chan so popular like that. If everything is put under control, why we need civil newspapers? Why we need to read blogs? Isn’t it what our registered newspapers already did?

It’s obvious that Time was pissed:

“The first letters of the top 21 finalists in the poll spell out ‘Marblecake, also the game’.”

Wow, I like your blog but this post is meaningless and lack of researching.

1. 4chan is not a famous forum, why you need to mention them?

2. They hacked and manipulated the POLL results so you cannot use it as your supporting argument about censorship

3. There is no such thing as anonymous in the internet. You don’t use registration system doesn’t mean you are anonymous.

Hey Suf, that makes sense :)

1. Wow, you surprised me. 4chan may be not famous to most of us in Vietnam, but it is definitely one of the largest online bulletin boards in the world.

2. You’re right about this, Jan & I also commented about it above. But still I don’t see any contradiction to “censorship”.

3. Is it a test for me? Then how do you address yourself now, if not anonym? Incognito? Why you have to use a fake name, fake email and fake IP address via Anonymouse.org?

1. WOW, please check your fact before writing. How do you know it’s a largest? Based on what? Google search returned only 1.6 millions hit, Alexa ranking is only 97,000 which is nothing, and cannot be called “largest online bulletins boards in the world”

2. When you don’t have a credible support, you don’t have a strong argument. Simply said, your comparison between 4chan vs Gorvement censorship is not a strong argument. That’s it.

3. Yes, this was an obvious trap and you did fall for it. I intended to use Anonymous Proxy. I wanted to prove that there was nothing anonymous on the internet even without registration, and I knew that you can check my IP address, the same way 4chan forum can check their users’ IP addresses.

In addition, you did show that you checked my IP address and tried to reveal that I am using Anonymouse Proxy. By doing that you contradicted yourself. In one hand you said that censorship is bad, and anonymousity is good, but on the other hand, you checked my IP and try to reveal that I am using fake name, fake email and fake IP. YES, of course, your blog doesn’t require registration, remember? :) . Does it matter to you when you are supporting Annonymousity. :) :). Don’t you know that you shouldn’t reveal poster’s information? hmm :(

Again, keep up your good works!

Yours, SUF.

1. I appreciate your effort but I don’t see any reason to argue over this matter. Never trust Alexa, but if you want to know, ranking of 4chan.org is #732, not #97000. At least you should read my post carefully to know that it’s 4chan.org, not 4chan.com

2. Well again, you should read a post carefully before stating that its author’s wrong ‘cos I’ve never compared 4chan and government’s censorship. Anyway, still don’t see your point??

3. I think you misunderstand between what we call “personal” and “public”. It’s my personal blog, and it’s set under my control. You can think of yourself as a trapper or be proud that you can tease me to fall for your trap or whatever, it’s your matter, not mine. It’s kinda funny when you said “Don’t you know that you shouldn’t reveal poster’s information?”

Well, thanks, and keep up your good work too, but please be more reasonable & considerate.

To me, censorship is very necessary. Internet is just another way of communication, a form of online talking and online newspaper. Through internet, if people make friends and do entertainment, it’s okay. But, the problem is that there maybe some religious groups and political groups out there which are the threats to our government. That is what the censorship for, to prevent groups that are harmful to the government and the society (such as porn, China did this while Japan did not.)

Thank you for another informative blog. Where else could I get that kind of information written in such a perfect way? I have a project that I am just now working on, and I’ve been on the look out for such information.
